You’re already seeing it: “AI SEO,” “Chat Engine Optimization,” and “Prompt Engineering for Rankings.” These terms are designed to sell courses by making the future seem complex and proprietary.
These are not strategies. They are distractions.
Here is the truth:
You do not need a new playbook.
You do not need a new skillset.
You do not need to learn a new language.
You need to double down on what already works. With more discipline, more clarity, and more courage than ever before.
Because the rise of AI search is not a threat to SEO.
It is a verification.
The machine is finally getting good at spotting what matters. Real expertise. Real structure. Real trustworthiness.

Technical SEO is now the price of admission
The Old Way: A slow site or messy structure might cost you a few spots or nothing at all.
The New Way: If the search engine bot can’t crawl, parse, or render your content, you don’t exist.
This principle was driven home recently in a sharp analysis by Chris Lever, a Technical Marketer and Co-Founder of TechSEO North.
He pointed out that while the AI’s reliance on the Google index is foundational, there’s a critical technical nuance that many are missing: JavaScript rendering.
Chris’s insight reveals a dangerous blind spot for modern websites. While Google’s own crawler is incredibly sophisticated at rendering JavaScript to see a page’s final content, the various crawlers and retrieval mechanisms used by the broader LLM ecosystem are often not.
As his research shows, the ability to render JS is inconsistent across platforms:
- Google’s own products (AI Overviews, Gemini) can render JS.
- Others, like Perplexity and Claude, currently do not.
- ChatGPT’s citation feature is a “possibly,” meaning it’s unreliable.
This creates a two-tiered web. Your beautifully designed, client-side rendered page might rank perfectly well in traditional search, but to the retrieval agent for Perplexity or Claude, it could look like a blank page.
If your core web page content isn’t present in the initial HTML payload, the AI agent literally cannot see it. It will find an unreadable book, hit the Back button, and move on to your competitor.
As Chris correctly advises, this means technical strategies like Server-Side Rendering (SSR) or Static Site Generation (SSG) are no longer just a “nice-to-have” for performance.
They are becoming a “must-have” for fundamental AI visibility across the entire ecosystem, not just within Google’s walls.
The AI’s Retriever
The AI’s Retriever, the librarian in the pipeline, operates under strict time and resource constraints. It doesn’t have patience for broken JavaScript, unoptimized images, or hidden content.
As the WebGPT research shows, the agent is trained to take actions like a human will do: Search, Click, and Quote (Nakano et al., 2021).
If a click leads to a 404, a timeout, or a janky layout, the agent hits Back, and you’re gone. the agent will simply hit Back and move on to the next result.
Your technical foundation is no longer a “ranking factor.”
It’s the door to being considered at all.

It is the absolute prerequisite for being considered as a source.
E-E-A-T is the AI’s primary filter
The Old Way: E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) was a conceptual guideline for creating human-centric content. A soft guidelines for human readers.
The New Way: E-E-A-T is a technical requirement for being selected as a grounding source by the AI. It acts as a hard filter, the AI’s shield against hallucination.
The single biggest technical challenge for AI models is hallucination. The researchers were obsessed with reducing hallucinations. Mitigating this risk is a huge part of their work.
How did they manage to do it? By training the Retriever to prioritize sources that are demonstrably authoritative and trustworthy.
They train the Retriever to only select sources that are demonstrably authoritative, trustworthy, and experience-backed.
The AI is being taught to look for the same signals we’ve been talking about for years. Your job as a business owner, is to make it blindingly obvious to the machine that your entity is a reliable source of truth in your domain.
Being authoritative isn’t just about building trust with humans; it’s about passing the AI’s algorithmic fact-check. This means E-E-A-T isn’t just about reputation anymore.
It’s about provable credibility.
The AI isn’t asking, *“Is this trustworthy?” * It’s asking, “Can I verify this?”
If your web entity pass that test, you’re in.
If not, you’re ignored.
Structure and context of your web entity
The Old Way: A long, narrative blog post could rank well if it had the right keywords.
The New Way: Context is critical and web pages must be structured to be “tool-friendly”, “quotable.” and helpful for the user.
Why? Because AI doesn’t “read” like a human. It queries.
Remember the Toolformer principle: the AI is learning to ask its own questions to find specific pieces of information (Schick et al., 2023, p. 1).
When the AI executes an internal query for a fact, it isn’t looking for a story. It’s looking for a clear, concise, and parsable answer. Just as humans do when they scan or read a page.
Let’s use a real-world example. Imagine you’re running a banking business and a user asks an AI assistant, “What’s the best friendly online bank for a small business?”
The AI knows “friendly” is a subjective, human concept. It can’t search for that directly. So, it breaks that vague query down into a series of concrete, factual internal queries to find the answer.
It might look for things like:

But the AI’s investigation doesn’t stop at your domain.
It will also execute queries to understand what the rest of the world is saying about you. It might look for things like:

Important point to mention, your online reputation now functions as a powerful, conversational ranking signal, much like backlinks have for decades.
A backlink is a structured vote of confidence from one website to another. A positive consensus about your brand on forums, review sites, and social media is an unstructured, human-language vote of confidence.
The AI is uniquely skilled at parsing this unstructured data to gauge authentic customer sentiment.
Therefore, your job is two-fold: have customer testimonials and structured data on your own site that explicitly state your satisfaction rating, and ensure that the public conversation about your brand on third-party platforms aligns with those claims.
A disconnect between what you say about yourself and what others say about you is a massive red flag for an AI trained to prioritize trust.
Your web entity (or website) is no longer just a document to be read. It’s a database of facts to be queried by an AI agent.
Make it easy for the agent to find what it needs.
Your enduring mission: Be the best source for the librarian.
Make it easy to parse. Make it easy to quote. Make it impossible to miss.
The ultimate mission: Be the Librarian’s first choice

The AI Search pipeline consists of a dialogue between two brains:
- Brain #1 (The Library/Retriever)
- Brain #2 (The Researcher/Generator).
You cannot control Brain #2. The LLM is a complex, proprietary system that will continue to evolve.
Trying to “optimize” for the Generator is a fool’s errand.
But you have immense influence over Brain #1.
The Library is the classic search index, and the Retriever is the librarian.
Your entire organic marketing strategy can be distilled into one simple mission: Make your brand the most reliable, comprehensive, and well-organized book in the library (In your niche), so that when the librarian goes looking for an answer, yours is the first one it pulls off the shelf.
